Student Elections: Iconography I

Our next step is working on the iconography for each role, a task that was asked of us after the last meeting. Beth explained to me that SU wanted an icon to work in conjunction with each planet/role.
Me & Beth brainstormed about what each role involved and how we could visually communicate that. I knew the style of icon I wanted to create: rounded, simple vector icons that read well.

Beth suggested to me just sketch out some ideas and we can discuss while she works on other aspects. So we did exactly that before I moved on digitally.
I am usually the type to start of digitally, just out of convenience, but by sketching first it made the digital part faster. It's a process I'll definitely keep doing, and one that I probably wouldn't have done if I wasn't collaborating with someone who works very 'hands-on'.

Each icon took time to perfect. There were many different versions on a similar visual, as well as abandoning icons all together to work on a different shape.

Red : Nope
Black : Developmental
Blue : Final (as of now)

Most decisions were made solely based on how well it communicated.
Raise & Give: What was to be welcoming hands, looked like a 'halt' signal. The pound sign translating 'raising money' a lot better. Campaigns: Choosing a series of 'sound lines' that fit the planet's circle the most comfortable.  Events: Drop pin communicated location more than 'Events'. Communications: Removing the speech points as to no overwhelmed/loose the simplicity of the planets edge.
We are still left to create icons for Welfare and Societies: a new role.

Below are some mockups of how the icons will work within the planet shapes. Additionally, many different styles of the same design were tried within the planet shape to see what works the best.
The atmosphere of discussion and working tonight was incredibly helpful. There was constant feedback. We can create different versions of an idea and bring them together to a happy medium. So far we are incredibly productive, having large productive days of churning out work.
