Secret 7: Imagine - Symbols

After experimenting around with colour for a while I went back to the research elements to see if there was anything I could add, as it didn't feel quite finished when trying to move on. Looking into symbolism of the time, the 'hippie' movement alongside anti war queues I realised that I had unconsciously used the rising sun.

I don't know why, perhaps I was drawing just thinking of war, (world war II mistakenly, instead of the cold war) the stand on anti nuclear weapons and their relevance to this song. However, the rising flag has no place here; a design originally used in the Edo period of Japan and is known to represent the Japanese imperial army.

Though overall, its used nowadays rather commercially and due to its use in popular culture (drinks & packaging) it has it's own connotations, with far right-wing  groups using the design at protests and still carries a lot of its history, considering Japans actions during World Ward II. The whole thing makes me feel uncomfortable and is completely unrelated to this context and design, so I will edit it accordingly. I took this part of my process to add greater detail and intricacies to the design.

This is shows the importance of symbols, and what you use and why. It is important as a designer for my to educate myself on these things so I'm able to responsibly communicate a message clearly and correctly.
