Student Elections: First Experimentation

In the beginning stages we created separately. After understanding this solar system theme a simple vector image of a solar system was created. I did try to keep things like scale and planet numbers accurate, for my own sanity. We then discussed sizing and amount of roles/planets will be represented:
  • President
  • Raise & Give
  • Welfare
  • Events
  • Editorial
  • Communications
We counted six roles and again this could sway and change with some roles falling away this year.

After Beth briefly explained her concept so far I began to create solar systems. However, by peeking over at Beth's screen and with more discussion I strayed away from accurate sizing and fell more into a stylised image similar to what she was creating, especially after running into numbers problems, (roles vs planets) try the idea of trying to create an actual solar system idea dissolved.

I left Beth to re-create what she had in her mind as she would have a better understanding of the visual she wanted to create. Beth mocked the orbit system below up, from a series of sketches she had made earlier that week.
There was a brief discussion about subtle visual representation for each: She explained how the ring and moons of editorial suggest contact and work outside of University environment, while roles like Raise & give had a planet and a moon (two aspects of one role). However subtle it was also a good way for us personally to remember each role and it's planet. It's a nice amount of justification for such a playful visual.
The line weights Beth chose made it look friendly and approachable, however I do go on to explore a thinner line weight, to cover all bases when going presenting at the next meeting.

I then went on to edit the shape, bringing down the line thickness and editing the orbits to be a uniform: all sharing the same centre. I preferred the thinner 'cleaner' version only upon seeing it. I feel as though it reads better as a solar system.

Type
We then evolved into type exploration: looking for a suitable typeface that would be clean, clear and fit well with the overall space theme. We narrowed it down to 'Caps sans-serif' and then filtered that down further to Futura, as seen in the last three examples. Beth then took the type exploration further, as I focused mostly on the logo creation.

Colour Experimentation
Blue was used as a dud colour but we ran with it completely by accident and began to take it further. In terms of our printing limits this will change. Perhaps after visiting Footprint we will feel more confident to take colour in all directions.

This was a quick experimentation looking at landscape format for mediums like presentations and title screens.
