This brief was very helpful when it comes to the ever important ability of reading symbols, and understanding design aesthetics surrounding certain genre and time periods surrounding music.
The limitations of the brief makes you think about the effect of type and image and how to convey an equally powerful message and or visual without the aid of typography or ‘over-explanation’. For the John Lennon cover, it has made me as a designer think about he political, social issues that music highlights, and to think of ways to respect and celebrate that. In terms of the Etta James, I learnt that ‘what isn’t broke, don’t fix it.’ Keeping a classic a classic and just editing and playing with what is already there.
I’ve always enjoyed the concept of Secret 7. It’s an interesting artistic way to raise money and I’ve enjoyed creating these covers.
